Health benefits of africa star apple agbalumo, udara, Otien fruits

Star apple ‎Popularly called Agbalumo, Udara, and Otien in some parts of Nigeria,  Its fruit has been found to have higher contents of ascorbic acid than oranges and guava. It is also an excellent source of vitamins, irons, flavours to diets.
A recent study by researchers at Covenant University Ogun State in Nigeria showed that the local cherry fruit, African star apple (Agbalumo/Udara) lowered blood sugar and cholesterol, and could be useful in preventing and treating heart diseases.
The cotyledons from the seeds are used as ointments in the treatment of womanly and dermatological infections in Western Nigeria. Findings revealed the specificity of the different plant parts in ailment curing. The bark of the species was locally used for healing coughing, icterus and yellow fever while the leaves were employed to treat malaria, high blood pressure and anemia.
 It has also been reported that methanolic extracts from C. albidum leaves presented strong antibacterial activity against common bacteria such asEscherichia coli T. Escherich, Salmonella typhimurium Loeffler,Staphylococcus aureus.

Health benefits of Agbalumo ‎
1. High Vitamin C Content: ‎Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. Unlike most mammals and other animals, humans do not have the ability to make ascorbic acid and must obtain vitamin C from their diet. Agbalumo presents a good source for vitamin C , 100g gram gives 25mg of vitamin C. 

2. Natural Anti-Oxidant : ‎Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Also the bark of the tree according to research was used traditionally to treat yellow fever and malaria, while the leaf treated wounds, stomach ache, and diarrhea. In some parts of Nigeria the seeds are used to treat vaginal and skin infections. 

5. Prevents Heart Disease:  Frequent consumption of the fruit can help lower blood sugar and cholesterol thereby preventing or managing heart diseases. it is a very good recommendation for patients with heart problems. As with all fruits and food, moderation is key. Do not consume Agbalumo excessively because it could lead to heartburn.
