It has been months since over 4800 people applied for the Kwesé Inc #GoGettaz entrepreneurship competition, and by Thursday the 25th of January, 12 semi-finalists will take their dream further by pitching their ventures to a panel of judges and a live audience in Nairobi, Kenya.
Pascal Akahome (Nigeria), Abisola Akindeinde (Nigeria), Olalekan Bankole Emmanuel (Nigeria), Ivy Barley (Ghana), Veridique Musambaghani Kakule (Democratic Republic of Congo), Blessing Machiya (Zimbabwe), Dumisani Mahlangu (South Africa), Shola Peter (Nigeria), Farai Nechikwira (Zimbabwe), Uwitonze Sarah (Rwanda), Peter Wachira (Kenya) and Ezinne Uko (Nigeria) will then proceed to Strathmore University for the Grand Finale.
What is at stake?
Two $100,000 USD investments and a two-week mentorship with Econet Global founder, Strive Masiyiwa at Kwesé offices in South Africa.
This is the largest of its kind in Africa because it not only rewards 2 winners with investments, but also includes the added advantage of direct mentorship with Mr Masiyiwa as inaugural Kwesé Entrepreneur Fellows, as well as the opportunity to interact with other leading African entrepreneurs and innovators, and take part in other Kwesé Inc initiatives planned for later this year.
The 12 semi-finalist entrepreneurs include both for-profit and not-for-profit businesses. They initially won a cumulative total of points in 4 Kwese.com online quizzes, and were then asked to submit written pitches. After scaling through that level, they went on to the social media stage where they had to lobby for votes for their ventures from a global audience resulting in an impressive 50million combined votes!
Now all that is left between them and the top prize is the trip to Nairobi where they will pitch live and be assessed based on their ventures' sustainability, originality, social benefit and scalability. A combination of votes garnered from the social media shares and final scores from the upcoming pitch sessions will be used to select the winners on Friday 26 January at Mr Masiyiwa’s Townhall.
Kwesé Inc kicked off the inaugural #GoGettaz competition for entrepreneurs on 18 August 2017 in order to inspire entrepreneurship. It launched on win.kwese.com and the Facebook page of Mr Masiyiwa which has over 3million followers, many of them aspiring African entrepreneurs.
